HIGHER GROUND MEADOW
Natural Burial
Underhill farm has been in our ownership since 1988. During this time we have farmed under the Countryside Stewardship Scheme. We chose to enter this as we care about the environment and intensive farming did not appeal to us. No artificial fertilizer has been applied to any of our 130 acres. Each year we look forward to the wild flowers coming into bloom and enjoy their displays in our meadows.
Since living here it has been our intention to be buried on the farm. It is from this desire that the idea grew for a natural burial ground on the farm for all to use. The burial ground uses a twelve acre field on our higher ground, hence the name “Higher Ground Meadow” From this land wonderful far reaching panoramic views are obtained across the Dorset and Somerset countryside.
Skylarks nest in our hayfields. Buzzards circle overhead, and the hedgerows are alive with smaller birds. During the winter we get visits from Redstarts and Fieldfares. There are Tawny and Little owls which shows that our mouse and vole population must be good..
Foxes and badgers live undisturbed as do the resident roe deer which can often be seen grazing.
